By law tyres must have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm across the centre

You should change them when the tread is below about 2mm, when you notice damage, or when you suffer a flat that cannot be repaired.

By law, car tyres must have a tread depth of at least 1.6mm across three quarters of the tread width, around the full circumference. But a car tyre’s ability to grip, especially in wet conditions, will vary well before this, so start looking around when the depth reaches 2mm-3mm. A new tyre has about 8mm depth.
